Collage art and film date back to the early 20th century (the earliest collages have roots in 12th-century Japan). It was rooted in the age of consumerism where artists addressed an array of political and social issues by creating a carefully crafted collision of pre-existing images and sounds to generate new meanings and commentaries on the surrounding world. Collage has also pushed the boundaries of animation, by incorporating other artistic forms (e.g., photography, live action, experimental cinema, literature, found sound) while exploring an array of social, cultural and political issues. The photomontage is closest to what I’m exploring in this book. This approach involves multiple photos (or illustrations) cut or torn apart and united into a new image. And we can go on and on. There’s compositing (a digital tool where multiple photos are combined to make a single picture) and digital collage (using your computer mouse to cut and paste along with assorted software, like Photoshop). And there are deep fake videos, memes, and gifs, which all use some elements of collage.

Sketching is a natural and intuitive communication tool used for expressing concepts and ideas that are difficult to communicate through text or speech alone. In design applications, drawings are used at various stages of the design process: from the early concept drawings scribbled on a piece of paper to immersive interactions in which users manipulate and adjust the 3D form of an object in virtual or augmented reality environments. This variety in drawing activities brings about the need for different interpretation strategies that support not only the sketching activity itself, but also allow sketch-based interactions, such as sketch-based queries, to take place. In this book, we explore the different drawing approaches used in design and the algorithms required for processing and interpreting the different sketches and drawings in design. Computer systems can combine processing power with the nonrestrictive nature of sketches to allow designers to perceive and evaluate product properties under their multimodal and 3D forms. To achieve this potential requires combining efforts from several research areas including computer graphics, Machine Learning, augmented and virtual reality environments, tracking, and image/object retrieval, among others. An effective CAD system would be one that allows for a natural interface that does not distract the user from the design process.
