Starting from quantum mechanical and condensed matter foundations, this book introduces into the necessary theory behind spin electronics (Spintronics). Equations of spin diffusion, -evolution and -tunelling are provided before an overview is given of simulation of spin transport at the atomic scale. Furthermore, applications are discussed with a focus on elementary spintronics devices such as spin valves, magnetic memory cell (MRAM), magnetic tunnel junctions, magnetic diode, magnetic electroluminescent diode, single-electron transistor, bipolar magnetic transistor, magnetic NOT logic gate and hard disk heads.

The research area of spintronics, although being under investigation since decades, is still frequently excluded from physics in school and even in university. Although the mathematical formalisms used to describe spintronic processes are not exactly simple, the basic concepts and applications can often be understood without them – and teaching these should be part of physics education. While some of the possible future applications, such as quantum computing, are still dreams of the future, other applications are being used for years now, for example, in our computers’ hard disk read/write heads, and should thus be understood at least by physicists.
