The book describes Computational Science as a field related to the design, execution and use of arithmetical models to evaluate and solve scientific complications. Generally, the word refers to the application of computers to simulate or numerically analyze scientific systems or processes. This book claims that because of the complexity of mathematics, massive amounts of calculations involved, or both of them, computational science enables people to perform tasks that were difficult to do before. The author claims that although computational models can't replace the laboratory, they have undoubtedly become a complex part of the entire search for scientific understanding. Computational Science also allows researchers to build models for making predictions of what might happen in real life, such as weather pattern predictions.
Computational science lies at the heart of most scientific processes. The field has witnessed an explosion in adoption over the recent few years, and is now applicable in various sectors such as healthcare, education, industry, entertainment, and so on. The discipline should also not be mistaken for computer science (CS), even though they sound similar.
Most computational science programs make use of considerable amounts of high-performance computing (HPC) resources. The general breakdown of the forms of computational science study areas includes smart devices, high-performance clusters, embedded components, and big data among others. Even though these applications may be used in different ways, their fundamental computational algorithms are quite similar to each other.
Additionally, the effective application of computational technologies needs abstract, methodological, technical, and scaling procedures. This allows for easy studying, monitoring, and prediction of objects. Consequently, different software libraries have nowadays been established in order to fill up particular computing needs, so that application developers don’t need to waste their time re-developing supercomputing software to handle certain computing functions.
